MANAGEMENT

Environs has been serving a diverse and growing clientele since 2008. Scott Sacco, the firm’s founder, combines core expertise as a marketer, business strategist and communications advisor with extensive experience in business operations and strategic planning.  He has spent much of his career working in the investment management and natural resource sectors with organizations that have had high environmental, social and governance (ESG) profiles.

Prior to launching Environs, Scott was a managing director, vice president and founding principal of Forest Systems, LLC, a sustainable investment firm that acquired and managed forests and other natural resource assets for institutional investment clients, private equity firms and conservation groups. Over a ten-year period the company acquired more than 2.2 million acres in 12 states and directly managed more than 500,000 acres in nine states.  Scott served in a hybrid leadership role (COO/CMO), overseeing the firm’s business operations, marketing, communications and strategic planning functions. He also directed its conservation asset monetization program, which permanently protected tens of thousands of acres of sensitive lands through the sale of fee simple ownership rights and conservation easements to environmental groups and public agencies. These efforts generated more than $24 million in unanticipated profit for clients. Forest Systems was acquired by a competitor in late 2007. During its existence, the firm produced top-tier investment performance and was recognized as a thought-leader in its sector.

Before joining Forest Systems, Scott oversaw marketing, communications and strategic planning for the Hancock Natural Resource Group, the world’s largest institutional forest and farmland investment firm. In that capacity, he led an 11-person team that supported the firm’s branding, capital raising and land acquisition efforts and that managed its external affairs apparatus, including news media relations, government affairs and community relations.

Earlier in his career, Scott helped market and brand Energy Investors Funds, Inc., which introduced some of the first alternative energy investment vehicles brought to the institutional market. In addition, he served as Director of Institutional Investment Communications for John Hancock and worked as a senior consultant with Schofield and Company, a boutique, global public relations firm that provided news media and executive communications counsel to banking and investment management clients like State Street Corporation, State Street Global Advisors, Alliance Capital Management and New York Life.

Scott was raised in Hanson, Massachusetts, a rural, agricultural community in the southeastern part of the state that was the birthplace of Ocean Spray Cranberries.  He graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in journalism and political science and holds a master’s degree in history extension studies from Harvard University, where his academic work focused on executive leadership and international relations.
